The vehicle workshop is one half of Whatley & Co, a Pewsey firm whose engineering roots go back to 1870.
From an ironworks to a working garage
Whatley & Co was established in 1870 and began at Wootton Rivers. George Whatley opened the Avonside Iron & Brassworks in Pewsey in 1875 to meet the local demand for agricultural machinery, and over the following decades the business moved from heavy engineering towards water engineering, which is still the larger half of the company today.
The company moved to Hightrees on Salisbury Road in 2005. Today the vehicle workshop sits alongside the water engineering side of the business, which employs nine full-time water engineers.
Four mechanics and an MOT bay
The workshop runs with four full-time mechanics and is an MOT test station, which means the test is carried out on site rather than sent elsewhere. The bays are authorised for motorcycles, cars, larger passenger vehicles and goods vehicles up to 3,500kg.
It is the same address as the rest of Whatley & Co — Hightrees on Salisbury Road, on the edge of Pewsey.
