The vehicle workshop is one half of Whatley & Co, a Pewsey firm whose engineering roots go back to the 1870s.

The company

From an ironworks to a working garage

Whatley & Co traces its origins to George Whatley, who opened the Avonside Iron & Brassworks in 1875 to meet the local demand for agricultural machinery. The business began at Wootton Rivers before moving into Pewsey, and over the following decades shifted from heavy engineering into pumping equipment, hand water pumps and cast iron work. During the war years the building was used to produce shell cases and other specialist hardware.

The company moved to Hightrees on Salisbury Road in 2005. Today the vehicle workshop sits alongside the water engineering side of the business, which employs nine full-time water engineers.

The workshop today

Four mechanics and an MOT bay

The workshop runs with four full-time mechanics and is an MOT test station, which means the test is carried out on site rather than sent elsewhere. The bays are authorised for motorcycles, cars, larger passenger vehicles and goods vehicles up to 3,500kg.

It is the same address as the rest of Whatley & Co — Hightrees on Salisbury Road, on the edge of Pewsey.
